Algal Omega: Oil Weight vs. EPA + DHA

Emerald algae-inspired textures and golden oil droplets against a dark teal background.

Algal Omega’s oil, total omega-3 and EPA-plus-DHA numbers describe nested parts of one serving. The reviewed two-softgel serving lists 1,000 mg algal oil, 550 mg omega-3s and 450 mg combined EPA plus DHA. Do not add them together. Choose the quantity you actually want to compare, then use it consistently. [1] [2]

A fair cost comparison uses the same quantity

For hypothetical bottles with different EPA-plus-DHA amounts, compare price per equal amount of EPA plus DHA—not price per softgel alone. Also keep the serving size visible: a two-softgel declaration is not an amount per individual softgel. This comparison describes product value, not a personal omega-3 target.

If you are comparing this Mother Earth Labs formula with another omega-3 product, choose the quantity you want to compare first. Total oil, total omega-3 and EPA + DHA answer different questions.

Read the label from the outside in

The posted U.S. label lists two tapioca softgels as one serving, with 30 servings in the 60-softgel bottle. Within that serving, the 1,000 mg oil entry contains the fatty-acid amounts listed beneath it. EPA means eicosapentaenoic acid; DHA means docosahexaenoic acid. Both are omega-3 fatty acids. [2]

Algal Omega amounts on the posted two-softgel label
Label entryAmount per servingRelationship
Algal oil1,000 mgTotal declared source-oil amount
Omega-3 fatty acids550 mgA subtotal within the oil
DHA300 mgPart of the omega-3 subtotal
EPA150 mgPart of the omega-3 subtotal
Other omega-3 fatty acids100 mgThe rest of the declared omega-3 subtotal
Omega-6 fatty acids40 mgA separate fatty-acid entry within the oil

The arithmetic follows the indentation: 300 + 150 + 100 = 550 mg omega-3. For an EPA + DHA comparison, use 300 + 150 = 450 mg. The other 100 mg still belongs in total omega-3; it does not become EPA or DHA merely because the ingredients share a category.

Keep the serving size attached to every number

A comparison can go wrong even when every number is copied correctly. If one bottle reports amounts per softgel and another reports them per two softgels, the larger serving can look more concentrated than it is.

Dividing the posted Algal Omega serving by two gives these label-based averages per softgel: 500 mg algal oil, 275 mg total omega-3, 150 mg DHA and 75 mg EPA. Combined EPA + DHA is therefore 225 mg per softgel. These are arithmetic averages from the declared serving, not separate laboratory measurements or a recommendation to change the directions.

The label’s suggested use is two softgels daily, with or without food. For another product, read its own directions and serving basis. Our Supplement Facts guide explains how to keep that denominator visible. [2]

What percentage of the oil is EPA + DHA?

Using the declared amounts, 550 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 55% total omega-3 by source-oil mass. The EPA + DHA calculation is 450 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 45%. Both can be correct because their numerators differ.

Neither percentage is a clinical effectiveness score. It describes the composition shown on this label. NIH notes that omega-3 supplements vary in their amounts and forms; the useful comparison is the named fatty acid on the same serving basis. [3]

A price comparison needs the same denominator

On October 19, 2026, the official U.S. product page listed the bottle at $28. At that price, $28 ÷ 30 servings is about $0.93 per labeled serving, before shipping, tax or discounts. [1]

For a comparison based specifically on EPA + DHA, the bottle contains 30 × 450 mg = 13,500 mg, or 13.5 g, according to its declared amounts. $28 ÷ 13.5 g is approximately $2.07 per gram of combined EPA + DHA. Do not compare that figure with another product’s cost per gram of total oil; the units would match while the contents would not.

Price per gram is one comparison tool, alongside source, capsule ingredients, directions and suitability. It does not establish that a product produces the same outcomes as a different formula or a study using another preparation.
